When it comes to treating a sprained ankle, there tends to be a wide variety of information out there. From the run-of-the-mill “just rest it and you’ll be fine,” to “try ankle braces,” or “put some ice on it.”
Little do these advice-givers know, there is an important window of opportunity that opens up when you first injure your ankle. As long as you’ve only sprained your ankle (fractures will almost always need to be placed in a boot first, and cared for in a different way), you should get started with a treatment and recovery rehab program immediately, the very same day as your injury.
This will allow you to greatly reduce your recovery time by controlling and getting rid of your initial swelling faster, while you also start to introduce simple range-of-motion movements and strength training exercises, both of which will help speed up the healing process of your ankle dramatically.
(Granted, if you do have an older injury that’s left you with a weak ankle, you can also use these same stretches, balancing techniques, and strength exercises to rehabilitate your previous injury as well.)
Initial Treatment and the Three Stages of Rehab
Once you’ve sprained your ankle, three common symptoms will generally show up. These include pain, bruising, and swelling, and will need to be dealt with before you can move onto actually rehabbing your ankle with stretches and other exercises.
While resting, icing, compressing, and elevating your ankle is a good idea at the beginning of your recovery, you can also use a few additional, unique strategies as a means to speed up the natural processes the body goes through. These include self-massage, as well as contrast therapy, two exceptional ways to help your body filter out and remove the remaining swelling from your ankle.
From there, the rehab process should go through three different stages – introduction of range-of-motion movements, dynamic stretching and balancing, as well as strength training exercises. By moving through each phase of your recovery in a progressive, deliberate manner, results tend to come easily and very quickly.
